Luthfi's Review : Understanding Student Differences Part 1

It's been a long time since writer latest posts; it's been a busy time indeed a college life when you miss the time when you can sleep under 9 pm; good old times. However, writer has been busy not for nothing, writer has been doing a writing of research proposal with the subject of teacher and counseling. In other words, writer has been reading some journal that related to writer's proposal. One of the journal that writer has been reading that indeed could be a good information for the audience, especially for teacher or future teacher, would be Understanding Student Differences. Here is the complete information of the journal :

Year____.: 2005
Publisher_ResearchGate
City___...: State of North Carolina
Title____.: Understanding Student Differences

The journal is indeed useful especially for us who wants to be a teacher in the future. Which is why in this section, writer would divide the review into many parts so the audience could understand the review properly; on this occasion writer would provide with the abstract and introduction review; why Professor Richard and his partner Rebecca wanted to do a research about the subject.

Abstract
In the abstract, authors explained that how students have different motivation, attitudes, orientation, response, to learning; which concludes that every students is indeed have their own differences. The statement before concludes that if teacher able to understand students differences properly then the better learning session would be as teacher would understand the differences and adapt to the most suited learning styles, approaches, and even understand their intellectual development levels. This research also is a development from a previous research in each categories, thus reviewing its effect on pedagogical implication, hence will suggest the reader about potential further study. (Felder, R. M & Brent, R, 2005)

Introduction
Authors have explained that there are problems that have happened in their country, which would be the declining interest of engineering students. Students lose interest because of so many factors, some believe because engineering is difficult, and some believe because their instructor was not competent enough to teach engineering. Which concludes that, instructors and faculty should improve their way of teaching as if they don't improve anything, many students would lose interest hence, it would be difficult to produce a good engineer.

Students have different background, strength, weakness, and motivation which concludes that students will have so many differences and requires proper method in order to teach them and motivate them. Also, with those differences students would have their own learning style which may be a consideration for teacher to change their teaching style with the proper style; however, it would be impossible for teachers to suit their teaching style for each students, hence the task of teaching would be complex and would not generate an optimum outcome.

In the history of North Carolina University, instructor usually use one teaching method and rarely change it. This would create a boring situation among students, thus would affect student's motivation on learning, hence students might lose interest on the subject.

Teachers should understand student's differences, which means their diversity. Diversity could be a gender and ethnicity on student performance. However, there are 3 important aspect in student diversity which are :

  1. Learning Style
    1. Learning style is how students perfectly fitted to receive information and process them. It could be by simply reading a theory, or doing observation, or doing practice, or just simply hear some lectures from the lecturer. Learning style would affect students interest and performance on the subject, thus determining their outcome.
  2. Approaches to Learning and Orientations to Studying
    1. Every students have their own approaches and orientation in learning, some of them just love to learn the surface and use the subject to pass the exam, some of them would take a deep approach and will explore the subject with questions and observation in order to truly understand the subject comprehensively, some of them just be strategic thus will do anything they can do in order to achieve a certain goal.
  3. Intellectual Development
    1. After teachers understand students preferences on learning style and approaches, teachers could finally observe their intellectual development as students intellectual development may varies to one another. Some would prefer believe in absolute truth and some believe the truth should be questioned; the development would be important to determine their future especially if they want to be come an engineering student.

Well, that is all the review that i have been re-phrase straightly from the journal. Now, we know that there are 3 important aspects teachers should know in order to properly generate a better outcome in teaching. This information should be used and considered to be affect your teaching style and counseling method. Never give up to improve, and put your students as your priority in teaching. next writer will review about the learning style, so stay tune, good luck!.
