First Review : Effects on Home Background on Educational Development

Hello, again fellow English Education Students! After last review of Understanding Student Differences, now writer would like to review another journal which still related to our previous journal. We understand that students have differences which are learning style, learning orientation, and intellectual development; however, do you guys know that those differences could be affected by family background? Yup, family background is likely a significant factor that would bend student's educational development which bring us to this review of journal titled as Effects of Home Background on Educational Development of Secondary School Students in Ebony State : A Case Study Onicha L.G.A . Below, you can see a brief information on the journal

Sound interesting does it not? Yeah, you know regardless what kind of performance student delivers in their own education institution, there is always a home background that affecting the performance.

This journal focused on Secondary School Students in Onicha Local Government Area of Ebonyi State. There are 200 respondents (170 students and 30 staff).

The abstract of the journal has stated clearly that home background indeed affecting student's educational performance. Yup, like just writer said before, student's performance whether they excellent or struggling during learning, there always a background who affecting it. For example, a child who has enough with his family poverty, he hates poverty that is happening in his family. He wants to make sure his child and his family shall no suffer from such poverty anymore, thus he decided the only proper way to get out of poverty is to study excellently.

Well not only family situation that affects child educational development, but also family members around him could also affect their development. Children would always seeking for a role model, either it would be his mom, fater, uncle, grandmother, grandfather, brother, sister. If by any chance, they could give a positive influence towards the children; children may have a greater chance to be excel academically.

Also, this journal stated that from various sources that:

  • Mostly students who study at secondary public school mostly originated from poor and average family (Hussain, 2006)

Luthfi’s Review Understanding Student Differences Part 4 Finale

Hello there! Now we are in the last part of this remarkable journal review. In this last part me personally would like to give you the conclusion of this journal. Also, be advised if you are still having any doubt about whether this journal is important for you or not, we suggest you to go back to the first part of the review, try to download the file and read it by yourself and see how important this journal is for you, especially for a teacher. Well, enough with the intermezzo, let us discuss about the final review of this journal.

This journal brings you all the way of the most troublesome aspect in teaching which is 'you don't know your students properly' then resulting in that you might be give up on them because they can't understand what you said and taught, even some might get mad at students because they did not give any single attention to their teaching at all. Regardless, the true problem lies on that teachers who don't have any awareness about the differences about their own students. Yup, this journal stated that because without proper understanding, teacher would find it difficult to even motivate their students to learn properly in their subject; it use the example of degradation of interest towards engineering department; in English, of course especially in Indonesia we might found most of our students have no interest in English, they just simply have wants, but no actual realization, because they lacked of motivation and we lacked of information about them.

The situation alone, brought Prof. Richard to write about the differences in student and how we understand it so we could exploit the information in order to optimize teaching and learning session into the best outcome. In conclusion, students have 3 differences which are
  • Learning style
  • Orientation and approach
  • Intellectual development
Learning style help student to learn with appropriate technique which benefited them the most; if used, student could understand the matter of subject even better and will be resulting in optimal outcome. There are many learning style that learners posses, even one learner could has different styles in different subjects.

Orientation and approach is all about how students regards the importance of the subject, are they learning this subject because the circumstance demands them to do so, or simply because they really want to learn the subject and master it, or they just want to learn it in order to gain higher expectations? With proper understanding of this, teacher would know the motive of their own students

Intellectual development is how students develop knowledge and information, are they going to receive the knowledge and yes acknowledge it without further development, or are they going to learn deeply in order to master and satisfy them self with the knowledge that they have been learning?;

From all of the 3 differences, teacher must understand that:
It is impossible to provide suitable teaching method for each student that could satisfy their differences
Yup, there is no way we can do that as this journal regards it as impossible. Teacher, especially in formal school, usually teaches multiple students in many classes; with their own unique differences. Thus, it is recommended for teacher to not be rigid, teacher should teach with different method in each learning session; if in one session one or more students found it that teacher has been teaching with suitable style that meets their characteristics, then they could learn optimally, whereas, student who found it the learning session is not suitable with their characteristics, then they must able to cope and motivate them self , vice versa. This of course, will give students another experience as they learn with different styles and give them more understanding in the subject they have been learning so far.

Well, that is all, indeed the information is suitable for us and to fortify our understanding on student differences, we are going to learn about how background affects student's academical performance. Good luck and may The God watches over you.
