Relation between Understanding Students Differences and Effects of Home Background on Educational Development of Secondary School Students

Well, we meet again, today we are going to discuss about the relationship between Felder's Journal and Chikweru's Journal. Of course, we all know that they have discussed indeed a very different matter, but in truth, writer did not picked out second journal just because of simple curiosity; there are connection which makes both journal is very related towards student academical performance which writer personally wished that this 2 journals will create a new perspective on students. Why they are doing this? Why they are like this? Why, Why, and Why, anything that is happening on your students, you can understand them even more by simply reading the two journals.

First Journal : Understanding Students Differences

This journal simply is all about the development of the students itself, without considering external factors which caused them become them. To put it simply, This journal just simply elaborate 3 main points which are:
  • Learning styles
  • Learning orientation
  • Intellectual development
The journals properly elaborated each meaning of 3 points, learning styles is how students properly learn, learning orientation is why students want to learn, and intellectual development is all about how students construct their own knowledge. However, as we have said before, this journal has not able to elaborate why learning styles, orientation, and intellectual development of each students are different? Which of course, brought writer to another research journal titled as  Effects of Home Background on Educational Development of Secondary School Students

Second Journal : Effects of Home Background on Educational Development of Secondary School Students

The curiosity why students are so unique and why we have variety of them could be explained by their own unique home background. Their economy status, how much brothers and sisters do they have, the social status of their parents, the intelligence of their parents, those are why students have their own differences; which of course no wonder it would be challenging for us if we want to understand them one by one properly.

Uniquely, writer can draw conclusion from this journal which is :
A singular children who has a very competent parents is having a greater chance of success academically rather than children who has brothers or sisters.

Well, that is the brief discussion that writer could bring for today, if you are so interested on reading them, don't forget to visit writer's previous articles and check them on your own.

Good luck!

Second Review : Effects on Home Background on Educational Development

Hello again dear readers! Today we are back, and today we are going to give you the methodology about our currently on review journal: Effects on Home Background on Educational Development and we are going to discuss the methodology. However, be advised as every research has its' own methodology so if you find any differences between this research journal and the others, it has greater possibility that your journal has different methodology than writers. Very well, let's check it out!
As the journal provide a brief methodology which of course will help readers to understand its' method properly, writer decides to put the entire methodology on this post

RESEARCH METHODS
This research adopted a descriptive design. The reason is that it aims at evaluating the effect of home
background on the educational development of secondary school students. Two hundred (200)
respondents comprising of 170 students and 30 staffs were randomly selected from secondary schools
in Onicha Local Government Area of Ebonyi State. The questionnaire contains questions rated on a 4
point scale of very high extent (VHE), high extent (HE), low extent (LE), and very low extent (VLE).
The criterion for decision was 2.50. T-test was used to test the hypothesis

From the methodology, we understand that the researchers decided to use a descriptive method which means that they shall provide any data provided descriptively; readers shall not find any difficulty in interpreting the data provided. The rest of the methodology is an elaboration about the sample which researchers has taken in order to provide the research; there are 200 hundreds people involved in this research. Also, in order to provide a representative data from the samples, researchers decided to use questionnaire which will be elaborated in the later section of the journal.

Well, this post is indeed brief enough, but writer belief this methodology alone could help you, especially the one who is working on their own research paper; may this methodology and this journal inspires you to be better. Don't forget to wait the next post!

First Review : Effects on Home Background on Educational Development

Hello, again fellow English Education Students! After last review of Understanding Student Differences, now writer would like to review another journal which still related to our previous journal. We understand that students have differences which are learning style, learning orientation, and intellectual development; however, do you guys know that those differences could be affected by family background? Yup, family background is likely a significant factor that would bend student's educational development which bring us to this review of journal titled as Effects of Home Background on Educational Development of Secondary School Students in Ebony State : A Case Study Onicha L.G.A . Below, you can see a brief information on the journal

Year : 2018
Published : ResearchGate
City : -

Sound interesting does it not? Yeah, you know regardless what kind of performance student delivers in their own education institution, there is always a home background that affecting the performance.

This journal focused on Secondary School Students in Onicha Local Government Area of Ebonyi State. There are 200 respondents (170 students and 30 staff).

The abstract of the journal has stated clearly that home background indeed affecting student's educational performance. Yup, like just writer said before, student's performance whether they excellent or struggling during learning, there always a background who affecting it. For example, a child who has enough with his family poverty, he hates poverty that is happening in his family. He wants to make sure his child and his family shall no suffer from such poverty anymore, thus he decided the only proper way to get out of poverty is to study excellently.

Well not only family situation that affects child educational development, but also family members around him could also affect their development. Children would always seeking for a role model, either it would be his mom, fater, uncle, grandmother, grandfather, brother, sister. If by any chance, they could give a positive influence towards the children; children may have a greater chance to be excel academically.

Also, this journal stated that from various sources that:
  • Socio-Economy of parents could affect student's educational development (Ajila and Olutola, 2007; Umaifo, 2012)
  • There are many factors that could affect student's performance (Ozmert, 2007)
  • Mostly students who study at secondary public school mostly originated from poor and average family (Hussain, 2006)
Well that is all for this introduction, writer hopes it would be enough to increase your curiosity in this journal. Next week, we are going to talk about journal's methodology. So, stay tune and have a special day!

Luthfi’s Review Understanding Student Differences Part 4 Finale

Hello there! Now we are in the last part of this remarkable journal review. In this last part me personally would like to give you the conclusion of this journal. Also, be advised if you are still having any doubt about whether this journal is important for you or not, we suggest you to go back to the first part of the review, try to download the file and read it by yourself and see how important this journal is for you, especially for a teacher. Well, enough with the intermezzo, let us discuss about the final review of this journal.

This journal brings you all the way of the most troublesome aspect in teaching which is 'you don't know your students properly' then resulting in that you might be give up on them because they can't understand what you said and taught, even some might get mad at students because they did not give any single attention to their teaching at all. Regardless, the true problem lies on that teachers who don't have any awareness about the differences about their own students. Yup, this journal stated that because without proper understanding, teacher would find it difficult to even motivate their students to learn properly in their subject; it use the example of degradation of interest towards engineering department; in English, of course especially in Indonesia we might found most of our students have no interest in English, they just simply have wants, but no actual realization, because they lacked of motivation and we lacked of information about them.

The situation alone, brought Prof. Richard to write about the differences in student and how we understand it so we could exploit the information in order to optimize teaching and learning session into the best outcome. In conclusion, students have 3 differences which are
  • Learning style
  • Orientation and approach
  • Intellectual development
Learning style help student to learn with appropriate technique which benefited them the most; if used, student could understand the matter of subject even better and will be resulting in optimal outcome. There are many learning style that learners posses, even one learner could has different styles in different subjects.

Orientation and approach is all about how students regards the importance of the subject, are they learning this subject because the circumstance demands them to do so, or simply because they really want to learn the subject and master it, or they just want to learn it in order to gain higher expectations? With proper understanding of this, teacher would know the motive of their own students

Intellectual development is how students develop knowledge and information, are they going to receive the knowledge and yes acknowledge it without further development, or are they going to learn deeply in order to master and satisfy them self with the knowledge that they have been learning?;

From all of the 3 differences, teacher must understand that:
It is impossible to provide suitable teaching method for each student that could satisfy their differences
Yup, there is no way we can do that as this journal regards it as impossible. Teacher, especially in formal school, usually teaches multiple students in many classes; with their own unique differences. Thus, it is recommended for teacher to not be rigid, teacher should teach with different method in each learning session; if in one session one or more students found it that teacher has been teaching with suitable style that meets their characteristics, then they could learn optimally, whereas, student who found it the learning session is not suitable with their characteristics, then they must able to cope and motivate them self , vice versa. This of course, will give students another experience as they learn with different styles and give them more understanding in the subject they have been learning so far.

Well, that is all, indeed the information is suitable for us and to fortify our understanding on student differences, we are going to learn about how background affects student's academical performance. Good luck and may The God watches over you.

Luthfi’s Review Understanding Student Differences Part 3

Hello there, fellow English Education Students! Welcome to the third review of Understanding Student Differences. Last week we have talked about the ‘blue print’ about what this journal going to be, we all know this journal will speak 3 important key points which are:
Learning Style
Approaches to Learning and Orientation to Studying
Intellectual Development
However, on this occasion we will talk about the methodology of this journal, yup before going deep into the journal we must know what methods did Professor Richard used for this journal? Knowing its methodology surely will help us understand the journal comprehensively. So, put your attention and check it out!

The journal will describe how student learn and their determined skill by it through variety of assessment, the assessment result will be considered as data later on. The data is indeed guaranteed to be reliable and valid which means there will be consistent result whether if the test has been repeated and the purpose of the data has serve its purpose properly.

The journal will use Olds, Moskal, and Miller analysis on data reliability and validity, which are:
Text-retest reliability: This will be a proper tool to test the stability of the data and research
Internal consistency reliability: Data should be correlated relationship with the main purpose of the journal with the necessary quantities.
Scale orthogonality: the scales for the instrument to test the reliability and validity of the data are independent
Construct validity: The instrument will indeed has a relevant result exactly like the purpose of this journal.

Also, in each point of this journal, Professor Richard will offer us a future research question that could be our inspiration to choose what topic you should choose for your research? For example, in the end of Learning Styles section, as you can see, Professor Richard has given us 11 eleven further study questions; indeed this journal will be helpful for all of us. Good luck!

Luthfi’s Review: Understanding Student Differences Part 2

Hallo there, fellow English Education Students! Today, I will tell you the second part of Understanding Differences review; yup, this journal indeed will be the best journal for you if you are planning to become a teacher someday, especially if you are going to manage large classes; this remarkable journal written by Professor Richard M. Felder shall give you a new perspective of handling your students one by one and in the end, we hope you guys will able to optimize your students’ potential.

Well, after we had talked about the introduction of this paper, which was the declining interest of senior high school students into engineering, then we are going to talk about the next part which would be the theories or literature review; overall this part we will talk about the orientation and introductory details of this paper which would be explained on the next review.

The first thing you should know according to this journal that there are 3 key points which differs students thus determining their differences; the three key points are:
1.      Learning Styles
2.      Approaches to Learning and Orientation to Studying
3.      Intellectual Development
However, spoiler alert, even though you have manage to understand every single of the key points, this journal stated that it would be unrealistic to use an adapted teaching strategy in order to suit your students’ preferences in learning styles to intellectual development; teacher should use a variables method in every learning session and shall not be rigid in the terms of learning method, which means that teacher should change his teaching method regularly, by regularly changing it, it would help your students who have preference on particular learning method and will give a new challenge to those who believe such learning method is quite difficult for them.

Learning Styles
Learning styles include:
·         Cognitive aspect
·         Affective aspect
·         Psychological behaviours aspect
Which will determine how our student shall respond to learning. For example, some students are:
·         Comfortable with theories and abstraction
·         Comfortable reading alone
·         Comfortable with active learning
·         Comfortable with lectures and visual presentation
·         Comfortable with discussion
However, all of the learning styles indeed have their own strengths and weaknesses and if one student being served with a comfortable leaning style; it would be a pleasure for him, if one student being served with a contrary learning style; it shall be a challenge for him.

Approaches to Learning and Orientation to Studying
In terms of learning there are 3 options for students to approach them, which are:
·         Reproducing Orientation
Student who has this orientation will only learn by memorization, mechanical substitution, and note; there will be no creativity in this approach therefore student would have a slight chance to comprehensively understand about the learning material; this approach called Surface Approach
·         Meaning Orientation
Student who has this orientation will try to explore every branches and possibilities about one particular learning material, thus he will try to ask any questions in order to comprehensively understand about the material; this approach called Deep Approach

·         Achieving Orientation
Student who has this orientation will indeed do anything in order to get the highest grade they can, taking a deep approach or a surface approach; depends on the situation which will determine their approach; this approach called Strategic Approach
Intellectual Development
Every student has their own unique in terms of intellectual development. However, this development could be put simply as how students’ think whenever they received a learning material; will they just simply agree or will they ask a question and try to explore any options for that material rather than solely relying on teacher’s explanation? Spoiler alert, it is mandatory for teacher to develop their students’ development into the level where they have an urge to explore and ask any possibilities about one particular material.

Well, that is all the 3 key points of student differences, I hope it shall be helpful for you, especially if you want to understand your students even better. Next, we will explore learning styles more deeply. Good luck!
